Mic Technique 101
Getting sound from your mic, but it's not quite right?
The very first things you should check:
OK, very first thing to check is your selected Input Device in your DAW. A student of ours was recording an interview for his radio show only to find that the selected Input Device was the computer's built-in mic!
Next thing to check, is your mic...backwards? Sometimes it's hard to tell which side of the mic you're supposed to speak into. This can dramatically change your sound from a rich, close, intimate quality to a distant, hollow quality.
If you're not sure, find out if your mic is "front address" (you speak into the top of it) or "side address" (you speak into the side of it). To find out what a backwards mic really sounds like, check out this short video we made.
